Logano rues missed opportunity
NASCAR teenage sensation Joey Logano lamented losing the chance of a strong result on his second ever Nationwide Series race following an incident that took him out of contention after leading from pole early on
The 18-year-old JGR driver dominated the first sixty laps of the race after claiming his first Nationwide Series pole at only his second attempt. However he dropped down the order during a pitstop and he later got spun by Greg Biffle, following a restart on lap 87.
The front end of his car had heavy damage due to the contact with the wall, including a broken radiator. This meant that his run for a strong result was eventually over very early into the 225-lap event.
"We had a really good car," said Logano. "Obviously, we put it on the pole and led the first part of the race there. We made our green flag stop and were still in the lead. Then, we came in and took those four tires and it put us back there in the trash.
"You got lapped cars that are way slower than you and they're all sideways. You put stickers on and you're obviously going to be looser. Somewhere within that mess - I'm not sure what happened behind me but I got tagged in the left rear and around I went.
"I got hit hard enough that I knew I wasn't going to save that thing. It was definitely a bummer. We had a great car - a car that could win the race and we couldn't capitalize on it."
Logano returned to the track after his team carried out repairs on his Toyota and was credited with a 31st place finish, 42 laps behind race winner Brad Keselowski.
Despite having the chance to get more track time after his car was fixed, he said he didn't enjoy running without racing anyone and that there was nothing to gain from just pounding the laps.
"Once you go out there and ride around, that's what you're doing, riding around," he said. "You get out of everybody's way. You don't want to get in the mess because you have nothing to gain. You don't feel like riding in the back with all the junk.
"What are you supposed to do? It pretty much was boring from there on out. You got no one to race and you're just making laps."
