Gibbs: No decision on Toyota yet
Joe Gibbs Racing President J.D. Gibbs says he still has to decide on which manufacturer he will compete for next year in the Nextel Cup, amid speculations that his team will be switching to Toyota for next year
JGR has been in talks with Toyota for some time as the Japanese manufacturer looks to move up the field, but Gibbs has stated that they have not made a decision and that the will do so over the coming weeks.
"We had some great conversations with GM (General Motors) here," Gibbs said. "We've obviously had a great partnership with them over the past 16 years. We've been great partners as well.
"I think going forward, we're just going to sit down. We're going through a process with all of our technical guys, figuring out where we need to be. GM, I think, just got a verbal agreement with Hendrick - the first team to kind of re-sign for next year.
"We're kind of in the same phase as I think a lot of the teams are. In the next several weeks, we're going to have to really figure out where our future is and our direction."
JGR has won three Nextel Cup titles, first in 2000 with Bobby Labonte, and then in 2002 and 2005 with Tony Stewart, all of them with General Motors. The first two were won with the Pontiac brand and the latter with Chevrolet.
Gibb's newly signed Kyle Busch has said he would support whatever decision his team takes regarding the future, despite being a Chevrolet driver since he first joined the Nextel Cup rankings.
"I think Joe Gibbs Racing will come out of the box strong," Busch said. "They wouldn't make the decision if it wasn't right for them, if it wasn't economically right for their sponsors and the success rate.
"You know, I've got a lot of great friends over at Chevrolet and have developed a strong relationship with those folks. Hopefully I can still have that whether or not we do decide to switch over here at Joe Gibbs Racing."
Toyota regularly fields seven cars in the Nextel Cup, but only one of them is not a new team.
Bill Davis Racing has been getting the best results for the Japanese manufacturer this year with their driver Dave Blaney, while Red Bull and Michael Waltrip Racing have struggled to consistently qualify for races in their maiden Nextel Cup season.
