Earnhardt to lose number 8
Dale Earnhardt Jr will not be racing the No 8 car next year after negotiations between Hendrick Motorsports and Dale Earnhardt Inc, who have the right to use the number, didn't come to fruition
The No 8 had been raced by Earnhardt's grandfather Ralph and was then adopted by Junior since his Nextel Cup debut in 1999.
He said after signing for Hendrick Motorsports that he would like to continue using it in his new team, but sadly for him that won't be the case.
"We've been working hard to secure the No 8 for Dale Jr's car number next season," said Marshall Carlson, general manager of Hendrick Motorsports. "Obviously, he has a tremendous history with that number, and we know how important it is to his fans.
"Unfortunately, we couldn't reach a point where the terms made sense, and now we have to move forward with other options. We appreciate the efforts of Max Siegel and his team (at Dale Earnhardt Inc.), and are excited about unveiling our plans for 2008 in the near future."
The news will be very disappointing for the many Earnhardt fans who proudly wear the No 8 in just about anything, and also to merchandise businesses which will probably have to put all their No 8 items on sale.
"I'd like to take it and use it the rest of my career. I'll give it back when I retire but I'd just like to run the No 8 the rest of my career," Earnhardt said at Indy two weeks ago.
"But if we don't run the No 8 then we've got some other options that I like a lot. So I won't be as tore up as much of my fans will."
The No 81 is said to be considered among the likely options for Earnhardt when he makes his Hendrick debut next year at Daytona.
