Villeneuve to watch with spotters
Jacques Villeneuve will watch Sunday's NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Martinsville from the spotter's tower in a bid to learn more about the sport
The Canadian, who recently made his Nextel Cup debut at Talladega, will race in Saturday's Craftsman Truck race at Martinsville before watching the Cup race to get a better understanding of how a NASCAR race unfolds.
Villeneuve's Cup crew chief Richard 'Slugger' Labbe said: "Jacques is an out-and-out racer, and he found it tough to hear us telling him to let drivers go at Talladega.
"He fought his heart out every corner and straightaway, every lap. But these races have a pattern, and sometimes, to win the war you're best to let the battle go."
Labbe believes that Villeneuve will benefit greatly from the experience on Sunday, as he has been happy to learn as much as possible since announcing his switch to NASCAR.
"The chance to view from the spotting area is a huge help," said Labbe. "The great thing is that in spite of his talent and successes, he's always ready to listen and learn. I'm sure he'll pick it up pretty quickly."
Villeneuve believes that the Truck Series race at Martinsville will be an eye-opening experience, as he prepares for his first race on a short oval after testing at Caraway recently.
"I now know how to drive a short track, but nothing can prepare me for the unique demands that the pack will create," he said.
"It's another new NASCAR experience, and another chance to learn. I'm looking forward to it."
