New Ducati 'scary', says team boss
Ducati Team manager Livio Suppo badged the new Desmosedici GP7 as 'scary' after winning the Qatar GP in the hands of Casey Stoner
While second-placed Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi managed to overtake Stoner a few times in the twisty section of the circuit, the young Australian was always able to retake the lead on the long front straight thanks to his bike's superior power.
"I must thank Filippo (Preziosi, head of the GP7 project) because the bike is really scary," Suppo told TV channel Italia 1, before praising the rest of the team.
"At least on the straights, we go really quick. I think today we demonstrated Italian technology can do incredible things: a small group such as ours managing to be competitive at this level in this championship is really incredible. We must thank all the boys: it's the Italian ingenuity making it, it makes me very proud to be here."
In contrast to Stoner's victory, teammate Loris Capirossi crashed out of the race on lap seven. The Italian, however, looked able to run with the best, being close to the leaders in fifth place before retiring.
"Let's not forget Loris last year had an incredible season with no mistakes," explained Suppo. "Statistically an error had to happen: it happened to Valentino in the last race and this time it's happened to him. It's a shame, because maybe we could have had two of our guys on the podium.
"Casey has been very good all weekend, and this is a track that suits his style well.
"Loris and Casey get along very well, and what happened yesterday in qualifying demonstrates it. Loris had some problems so he asked Casey for a hand, but the latter didn't know Loris said this much to the journalists.
"When Casey was asked in the press conference about the set-ups being the same, he replied it was just a coincidence, but when he was told the media knew about it he blushed. There is a really good atmosphere. They are two great guys, they esteem each other.
"Loris has always said from the beginning Casey is extremely strong. As I said before, this track suits Casey's style, but there will be others where Loris will beat him soundly. But the important thing is that we are a team, and that we try to do the best all together and we have fun."
Asked how much fuel was left in the bike at the end of the race, Suppo replied: "At the moment I don't know - I guess not much. But then if I tell you these things Filippo kills me."
Suppo also had words of praise for suppliers Bridgestone and Shell.
"Our tyres have improved a lot and even last year we already had a podium place here. To work with a company that also works in Formula One is very important. The petrol you use can greatly help in improving fuel consumption. We've done a great job with them, and every little helps."
