Le Mans MotoGP: Pedrosa leads first practice from Lorenzo
Dani Pedrosa hung on at the top of the times in opening MotoGP practice at Le Mans despite a strong late challenge from Jorge Lorenzo
Pedrosa's Honda had led the way for most of the morning, getting down to rapid flying laps quicker than anyone else and building an early cushion over the field.
When Lorenzo slipped his Yamaha ahead mid-session, Pedrosa immediately found more pace and put in a 1m34.645s to go four tenths clear.
But in the closing minutes Lorenzo narrowed the gap considerably, first to 0.2 seconds and then just 0.004s with his final lap.
Valentino Rossi completed the top three on the second Yamaha.
Ducati's weekend got off to a very encouraging start, with late runs from Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso getting both into the top five.
Championship leader Marc Marquez was in the top three for a while, but was pushed down to seventh - behind Cal Crutchlow - in the final minutes.
Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl were next up, while Hector Barbera again shone as he beat Aleix Espargaro to CRT honours and the final top-10 spot.
Ben Spies' stand-in Michele Pirro was down in 13th having had to switch to his spare Pramac Ducati due to a mechanical problem.
Conditions were dry and sunny, if cold, but rain is forecast for much of the weekend.
