Grapevine: McWilliams helps out young riders

Former MotoGP rider Jeremy McWilliams has turned his hand to assisting young riders from Northern Ireland, starting this weekend at the opening round of the European Superstock championship at Valencia

McWilliams is helping out Danny Brill and David Paton on Honda 600s and Grant Malloy in the Suzuki GSX750 Cup, making the step over to coaching and guidance after riding for many years in 500cc and 250cc Grand Prix British Superbikes and MotoGP.

"It's interesting watching these guys hang on every word I say ," said McWilliams. "I have help them get the bike set up on one side, but the party days may well have been put on hold for the time being. It's my birthday today, but I think I'm going to be early to bed tonight."

McWilliams famously beat Valentino Rossi to second place in the German 250cc race in 1998 before winning the Dutch 250cc Grand Prix in 2001.

During the crossover year in 2002 of four-stroke MotoGP bikes and 500cc machines running together, he beat the MotoGP bikes at Phillip Island, clinching pole with the tree-cylinder 500cc Proton KR.
