125cc: Surtees to unveil new team
Former 500cc motorcycle and Formula One world champion John Surtees is heading a new 125cc GP team, which will be officially unveiled in China tomorrow
Surtees is spearheading the new Maxtra 125cc GP team, which also involves former Suzuki boss Garry Taylor. The outfit are scheduled to begin testing within the next month.
Speaking to autosport.com, Surtees said that Taylor's involvement was vital for helping get the team off the ground.
"I brought Garry Taylor on board because he has the knowledge of what it is like to run a MotoGP team (Suzuki) and therefore understands the logistics, budget and regime of team manager.
"Long term we want to make this programme less of a satellite affair but one with shared technology with China and then eventually all in-house in China."
Surtees said he hoped the team would be ready for the start of 2009, although there was no firm plan yet.
"It is not yet decided," he said. "We will not be held back by training riders so we need a test rider with experience, and a youngster.
"Testing will start in a month, something that has been delayed somewhat ironically with the launch tomorrow here in Shanghai. It may well be the last race here in Shanghai, so it is logical to have it here."
