Drivers Vow to Fight for Title

Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchitti have vowed not to give up on fighting for the Indy Racing League title - despite leader Dan Wheldon's record points-lead

Wheldon has a 73-point lead over Kannan, which is the highest mid-season advantage in the IRL's ten-year history.

Kanaan failed to capitalise on his teammate's misfortune at last weekend's Nashville race. After Wheldon suffered his first retirement in 11 months with a suspension problem, Kanaan got involved in an accident with Ganassi's Darren Manning after the Brazilian hit some debris.

"I think this championship is going to be decided in the last two races anyway," Kanaan said. "Wheldon can't put his foot wrong and I can't either. I hope I can catch him and win the championship. If I cannot win this championship, I hope he does."

Franchitti also came into the title hunt with a victory at last weekend's Nashville Race, moving to 78 points behind teammate Wheldon.

Franchitti has also vowed not to give up, stating: "It's a season-long battle. We had terrible luck in the first half of the season. I hope to have good luck in the second. We're right there. We'll just keep pushing and see where we end up."

Wheldon is more philosophical about his chance of holding onto his lead. He said: "From my standpoint, whatever happens, happens. You can't control it. The team always does a fantastic job for me.

"I'm sure we'll be good this weekend at Milwaukee. What you can control, you have to make sure you do good at it. If I'm meant to win the championship, then it will happen. If not, then I'm not."
