Servia hopes to race on after Indy
Oriol Servia hopes he can use a good Indianapolis 500 run as the springboard to earn a full-time return to the IndyCar Series - hopefully with his current Rahal Letterman Racing team
Both RLR and Servia have been unable to put together full-season deals for 2009, so have united just for their Indy programmes. The Spaniard, who was the best-placed of the final batch of Champ Car converts in last year's standings, said at present he was content just to be part of the Indy 500, but hoped that a competitive performance in the race could lead to other opportunities.
"Just being here is good," said Servia. "If we do a good job, who knows? The team and myself, obviously, want to be there at the end of the season. We're working for it, and having a good race, I'm sure it would help."
Servia took 25th on the grid in today's third qualifying session. He said he never doubted that he would make the field, despite only completing his deal with RLR a few days ago, and also expects to rapidly move forward on race day itself.
"I knew we were going to be in the race," said Servia. "We actually were hoping to the fastest car today. We didn't do that, but the car still feels great and I'm sure we'll be even better for Sunday.
"I jumped in the car Thursday, and it felt great and we're in the race. The car felt great right away. I'm very hopeful that we can bring the car to the front on Sunday [24 May]."
