J Andretti fastest in morning practice

Roth Racing's John Andretti was fastest in the morning practice hour prior to today's second qualifying session for the Indianapolis 500

The returning veteran led Dale Coyne Racing's Bruno Junqueira and Vision Racing driver Davey Hamilton, as the drivers who will fight for positions 12 to 33 on the Indy grid took centre-stage.

Mario Dominguez and Max Papis' participation in today's qualifying now looks doubtful, however, after both crashed during the session.

Pacific Coast driver Dominguez hit the barriers after a spin on the entry to Turn 1 with 20 minutes to go, while Papis spun his Rubicon/Schmidt car into the Turn 3 wall on his final lap of the hour.

Will Power (KV Racing) and EJ Viso (HVM) were both back on track after their Friday crashes, taking their repaired cars to 11th and 18th respectively.

Dreyer & Reinbold duo Buddy Rice and Townsend Bell completed the top five in practice, ahead of Newman/Haas/Lanigan's Graham Rahal.

The session also saw the first appearance by the race's 37th entry, as Phil Gibler's American Dream Racing car took to the track for the first time since the new team's deal came together, although Giebler only completed two installation laps and did not attempt a flying lap.

Today's six-hour qualifying session was due to decide positions 22 to 33 on the grid, but after last Sunday's rain-out, it will now allocate every grid place from 12th backwards.

The drivers who miss the cut will then have a final chance to break into the field in tomorrow's Bump Day qualifying.
