Monza qual 1: Zytek stars
The Zytek chassis proved a revelation in first qualifying for the inaugural round of the Le Mans Endurance Series at Monza, as sportscar veteran and former F1 driver Stefan Johansson beat the might of the Audi R8s to set provisional pole
The Swede took full advantage of the nimble lightweight characteristics of the factory Zytek 04S over Monza's three chicanes to set a time almost a second quicker than the first Audi R8, driven by Allan McNish.
Proving the strength of the Zytek's potential, second fastest was the Creation Autosportif version of the British-built prototype, designated a DBA4, driven by Frenchman Nicolas Minassian.
McNish led the Audi charge with the Team Veloqx entry in third ahead of Rinaldo Capello in the Team Goh R8. Jamie Davies qualified the second Veloqx car fifth with the Advan Kondo Dome an impressive sixth.
Martin Short's Rollcentre Racing Dallara-Judd, which showed so well in Sebring earlier this year, impressed again with the seventh fastest time, just over two seconds off the pole but ahead of the Pescarolo C60-Judd.
Belmondo Racing's C65 Courage was the fastest LMP2 car, while last weekend's FIA GT Championship race-winning Vitaphone Saleen, driven by Uwe Alzen took the LMS provisional pole. Not surprisingly Stephane Ortelli's Freisinger Motorsport Porsche 996 GT3 was the quickest LMGT car.
