Luhr/Krumm win dramatic TT
Michael Krumm and Lucas Luhr came out on top in a thrilling battle for the historic Tourist Trophy at the Silverstone round of the FIA GT1 World Championship round
The JR Motorsports Nissan took victory in the one-hour championship race by just two tenths of a second. Luhr held off a determined challenge from Alex Muller in the Young Driver Aston Martin shared with Tomas Enge.
Enge led from pole position until the mandatory mid-race pitstops, which took place under the safety car. Luhr got out of the pits just ahead of Muller and briefly lost the lead to Muller on his out-lap before nipping back past on the run down the Wellington Straight to Brooklands.
Muller got down the inside of the Nissan into Village on the penultimate lap, but Luhr held the inside for The Loop and was able to hang on to the lead.
Krumm said he was thrilled to join a list of famous winners of the Tourist Trophy that includes Tazio Nuvolari, Stirling Moss and Graham Hill.
"This is one of the most important wins of my career," he said. "This is amazing. I think both of us should be proud to be on the list with all those famous names."
Third place when to the Selleslagh-run Team China Chevrolet Corvette driven by Mike Hezemans and Andreas Zuber. Zuber, who crossed the line four tenths behind the winner, very nearly got a run on the leaders as they battled in the Arena section on the penultimate lap.
The race was marred by the incident that triggered the safety car. JRM Nissan driver Richard Westbrook nudged the second Young Driver Aston driven by Stefan Mucke into a spin at the Becketts right-hander.
Westbrook was limping back to the pits with a puncture when a recovering Mucke appeared to drive into the Nissan. The Aston spun around the front of the Nissan halfway down the Hangar Straight and slammed into the barriers.
