The seven-time world champion finally stops trackside. He may avoid any trouble with the stewards, who will have noticed his insistence on driving back to the pits and may have thought, "Such shenanigans!"
"Stop in the safest place possible", race engineer Carlo Santi requests.
"If I can make it back, I will. If not, I will do it safely," Hamilton replies.
"We have a puncture on the front right. Stop the car," Santi insists, sounding mildly annoyed.
"I can see that, I can see that," Hamilton acknowledges.
Hamilton locked up and went straight into the Tecpro barrier at the last corner and damaged at least his front wing and front tyres.
He got going again but is being asked to stop the car. He's got a full lap to do with his ailing Ferrari.
Red flag.
Lewis Hamilton is in the wall!
Max Verstappen takes to the track, the 21st driver to do so today, 20 minutes into the session. Arvid Lindblad, however, isn't about to: his team is still working on his car following a chassis change due to his hefty Friday crash.
Lance Stroll goes wide and takes to the run-off, but no harm done.
Leclerc goes three tenths better: 1m33.332s.
Kimi Antonelli's first attack lap of the session is a 1m33.664s – 0.002s slower than the track record he set yesterday.
Carlos Sainz locks up and manages to stop his FW48 ever so close to the Tecpro barrier.
The Ferraris are out on softs and aren't messing around. Lewis Hamilton's first timed lap of the day is a 1m34.284s, less than half a second away from his Friday best. Charles Leclerc is 0.149s in arrears.
Lando Norris cuts the chicane, a common sight so far this weekend.
As Alexander Albon slightly hits the wall on corner entry, Hulkenberg improves his lap time by one second.
Bortoleto gets us started with a 1m35.777s, subsequently beaten by team-mate Nico Hulkenberg in 1m35.721s.
Several cars have made it to the track, with Gabriel Bortoleto the first to start a flying lap.
F1 has raced in Madrid before – sort of. The Jarama track, 20 miles away, hosted nine races from 1968 to 1981, with eight different winners – the likes of Jackie Stewart and Patrick Depailler.
