Sebastien Loeb thought he had ended his unhappy run of defeats and brought himself right back into title contention by winning an epic Rally Australia - but six hours after the finish he had to hand the trophy to championship rival Mikko Hirvonen after the officials found a homologation irregularity on the victorious Citroen

That put Hirvonen five points clear again with two rounds to go, meaning the Finn has a real chance of ending Loeb's title run.

Things were more straightforward for another legend trying to take charge of a title battle, as Valentino Rossi utterly dominated the Misano MotoGP weekend, despite insisting earlier in the week that he would not be fast enough to win and would settle for a podium...

It was a good weekend for British drivers in the touring car world. Paul di Resta finally opened his DTM account for 2009 with a commanding performance on home ground at Brands Hatch, while Andy Priaulx - also win-less so far this season - surged through from 14th to win the first race on a crazy Oschersleben World Touring Car weekend, and then backed up team-mate Augusto Farfus' win with second place in race two.

The Superleague Formula delivered another action-packed, topsy-turvy weekend at Estoril, culminating in a big money Super Final win for Formula 1 refugee Sebastien Bourdais on his series debut.
