Series seals return to Lausitz
CART has announced that it will race on the EuroSpeedway Lausitz oval track this season with a race to be held on May 11, joining Brands Hatch on the series' European tour
The track hosted Champ Cars in 2001, but was dropped from last year's calendar after the circuit ran into financial difficulty. These issues have now been resolved, allowing for the series to return to the German track.
"EuroSpeedway Lausitz is one of the most impressive and modern motor racing circuits in the world," said CART boss Chris Pook. "When we did not return in 2002, the drivers and teams lamented the fact that we did not go back to such a spectacular facility."
EuroSpeedway Lausitz CEO Hans-Jorg Fischer said: "Since the suspension of the race in July 2002 I have met with Chris Pook several times and negotiated the return of the Champ Cars to Germany. The result is very pleasing, especially for my team, for the state of Brandenburg and for the Lausitz region."
Around 150,000 fans attended the 2001 event, which provided one of the best CART races of the season, with nine lead changes over the 154 laps. However, the race was marred after popular driver Alex Zanardi suffered serious injuries following a high-speed crash.
