McNish not settling for class wins

Allan McNish has said that he is determined to fight for overall victories rather than just focusing on taking class wins in the ALMS

The LMP1 Audi R10 has struggled to match the pace of the lighter LMP2 cars on some circuits this year, and McNish even spun while chasing an LMP2 Porsche last time out at Lime Rock.

However, the Scottish driver has vowed to keep pushing, rather than just concentrating on securing LMP1 honours at each race.

"As a race driver I want to win every race outright," said McNish. "That was proven by the way I pushed, possibly in hindsight a little too hard in a car that was unusually difficult to drive, in the last race at Lime Rock recently.

"I could have sat behind the back marker and bided my time. But I was in second place overall and only a few seconds behind the leader and it was my intention to get past and challenge the race leader as quickly as possible.

"The easy option would have been to sit back and cruise around and concentrate just on beating the 'sister' Audi and win LM P1 - but I'm there to race."

McNish and teammate Dindo Capello were beaten by the Porsches in their Audi R8 last year at Mid-Ohio, but the 1998 Le Mans winner is hoping that the R10 will be more suited to the track than its predecessor.

"The odds are not in Audi's favour," he said. "But the track may suit the R10 better and allow us to take the fight to the LMP2 cars."
