Jani aids title bid with Sprint pole

Neel Jani gave Team Switzerland the perfect qualifying result in their bid to wrap up the A1GP title by bagging pole position for the sprint race in Shanghai

The ex-Toro Rosso F1 tester pulled a great late effort out in the closing stages of the second 15-minute session to take the top slot from the impressive Filipe Albuquerque.

The Team Portugal star improved too, but it was not enough to reclaim pole. Rob Wickens did a superb late lap to take third, while Narain Karthikeyan gave Team India one of their best ever qualifying results by taking fourth on the sprint grid.

Fifth position was not what Team New Zealand or Jonny Reid need in their pursuit of the title, but that was a lot better than Franck Montagny managed for Team France. He'll line up way back in 18th.

Jonathan Summerton was sixth for USA, Alex Yoong a much-improved seventh for Malaysia, while Ireland (Adam Carroll), Germany (Michael Ammermuller) and Robbie Kerr (GB) rounded out the top 10.

Franky Cheng could only manage 15th in front of his home crowd.
