Bourdais vows to stay focused

Sebastien Bourdais has vowed to maintain the same approach to the remaining races of the season despite setting himself a target of wrapping the title up as early as possible

The Frenchman is closing in on a fourth straight Champ Car title. He now leads the standings by 53 points, with the cancellation of the Phoenix finale meaning that there are now just three rounds left this season.

But Bourdais says that the Newman/Haas/Lanigan team will treat this weekend's race at Assen like any other, even though he can clinch the title in Holland.

"The most important thing is to stay focused, enjoy the weekend, and keep approaching races one by one," said Bourdais.

"That's the way we have done it since I joined the series. But obviously it would be awesome to capture the championship this weekend - the sooner the better."

Bourdais will switch to Formula One after this season, and with a comfortable championship lead over Robert Doornbos, he looks set to end his five-year spell with Newman/Haas/Lanigan with another title.

"The team has done really well this year again," he said, "and hopefully the hard work is going to pay off."

Bourdais needs to outscore Doornbos by 15 points to secure the title this weekend at the Dutch driver's home race.
