Race: Pantano takes victory
Giorgio Pantano took victory in the International Formula 3000 race at Magny-Cours today, beating championship leader Bjorn Wirdheim by 4.7s
The Durango driver led the race from start to finish to become the first two-time winner in the series this year. He was chased all the way by Bjorn Wirdheim, although the Arden driver's challenge faded along with his tyres in the closing laps.
Ricardo Sperafico had a quiet race to complete the podium ahead of Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi and Tony Schmidt. Jeffrey van Hooydonk, Yannick Schroeder and Raffaele Giammaria rounded out the points scoring positions.
Several drivers were out of luck in the race. Patrick Friesacher finished 11th after spinning whilst trying to pass van Hooydonk. Jaroslav Janis, who had qualified an impressive fourth, found trouble from the start, with his gearbox jammed in first gear. It finally gave up after just three laps.
Meanwhile, the Jordan Grand Prix Junior team continued its terrible weekend, with Derek Hill and Enrico Toccacelo finishing 10th and 13th respectively after struggling with their set-up all weekend. .
