Hynes makes shock F3000 return
Former British Formula 3 champion Marc Hynes will make a sensational return to international motorsport this weekend in the Silverstone International F3000 round, a support race to the British Grand Prix. The Briton has not raced a single-seater since 2000 and has not driven the latest Lola F3000 chassis
Hynes, who has not enjoyed a regular drive since beating Jenson Button and Luciano Burti to the 1999 British F3 Championship, has signed a one-off deal with the Spanish BCN Motorsports team. But he wasn't even granted an International A license required to compete in the series until late this week and has not had the opportunity to even shakedown the car or have a proper seat-fitting.
"I have been trying not to get excited about it," said Hynes, "because I've come this close to a deal before and it's not come off. But now I can relax and enjoy it.
"I haven't driven a car for more than two years and I don't know anything about this Lola, so it would be difficult to set any targets for myself this weekend. I just want to get through it, enjoy it and learn as much as I can. I don't think I can expect much more than that when I haven't even shaken the car down let alone test it properly.
"But I have confidence in the fact that I'm racing on home soil at Silverstone and I've won a grand prix support race before, so I know the track. I just can't wait to get out there."
Hynes says that the deal is a one-off at the moment and that the Silverstone race is a chance to evaluate his future prospects. "You can't really count on anything at the moment," he said. "I am just going to do my best and see where that takes me."
