Parente fends off Vettel to a win

Alvaro Parente kept his cool in the face of a race-long challenge from Sebastian Vettel to claim victory in the World Series by Renault race in Monaco

Parente led from pole, but Vettel was never more than 1.5 seconds behind. In the closing laps, the BMW Formula One tester closed right in as he hoped to force Parente into a mistake, but the Tech 1 driver held on for a historic win.

Salvador Duran picked up third after local hero Clivio Piccione spun with just three laps to go.

Duran muscled his way by Milos Pavlovic at the start, but didn't have the pace to make it a three-way fight at the front.

Pavlovic took fourth, a long way ahead of Giedo van der Garde in fifth.

The Dutchman had Briton Ben Hanley stuck to his exhaust throughout the race, but passing was as impossible as ever at Monaco.

Michael Aleshin took seventh.
