Formula E eyes London U-turn for 2016/17

Formula E is working to reverse its decision to axe London from its 2016/17 calendar by accelerating its plan for a race on the English capital's streets.

Series boss Alejandro Agag has revealed that there are "a number of serious possibilities" for a street race to replace the Battersea Park fixture, which will come to an end with the 2015/16 season finale next month.

London was dropped entirely for season three as the series evaluated the possibility of a bona fide street race for season four, but Agag said it could be belatedly incorporated into the 2016/17 calendar due to go before the World Motor Sport Council next week.

"We are working on London for season three or season four," he told Autosport on a visit to the Le Mans 24 Hours this weekend.

"My dream would be to do it on the Mall and race in front of Buckingham Palace, but there are some other really good possibilities like the Embankment or around the O2 Arena [formerly the Millennium Dome]."

Agag stressed that an immediate return of the London ePrix to the calendar was realistic because the event has the backing of new London mayor Sadiq Khan.

"The new mayor is keen; I haven't met him personally, but I have read his comments in the press," he explained.

Agag added that a race in and around the ExCeL centre adjacent to London City Airport remained a possibility.

"ExCel is a facility I like; it is little bit too far out but it is one of the options," he said.

The Battersea fixture will come to an end with the double-header finale on July 2/3 after a compromise agreement was reached with a local action group that had launched a legal challenge to prevent this year's event.
