Van der Zande dominates race two

Renger van der Zande dominated the second Formula Three Euro Series race at Barcelona and took a comfortable victory

The Dutch driver took the lead at the start when pole-sitter Edoardo Piscopo failed to get off the line, and van der Zande cruised away to open out a five-second lead over Tom Dillman by the chequered flag.

Piscopo was one of 10 cars to retire from the race on the first lap, as his stricken car was hit by Basil Shaaban. Behind that accident, Cyndie Alleman and Jonathan Summerton clashed, and their cars then careered into several others.

There was more drama at the first corner as race one winner Edoardo Mortara and Tim Sandtler went off, leaving just 15 cars remaining once the race was restarted after a safety car period.

Van der Zande initially pulled away from James Jakes who was running second, but the British driver dropped down the order when he took a trip through the gravel at Turn 1.

Behind Dillman, home driver Dani Clos was being reeled in by Franck Mailleux, and the Frenchman robbed Clos of a podium finish in the closing laps.

Filip Salaquarda held off a fierce attack from Sebastien Buemi on the final lap to take fifth place, while the Swiss driver had to settle for the final point in sixth place, having started 21st on the grid.

Championship leader Romain Grosjean was not officially classified as he was racing under appeal after the ASM team challenged the one minute penalty he received in race one for having too many mechanics working on his car on the grid.
