Qual: Piquet dominates
Nelson Angelo Piquet was the big winner in British Formula 3 qualifying at Oulton Park today. With a pole and a second for tomorrow's two races, the Brazilian championship co-leader has set himself up to pull away from his title rivals tomorrow
For the third straight meeting, wet weather has had a significant say in matters. But Piquet made the best of conditions to take a late fastest time in the first session, although Clivio Piccione (Carlin Motorsport) snatched pole from him after the chequered flag in the second.
The track started out very wet in the first session but got progressively quicker as the end approached and no further rain fell. But wet tyres were always the thing to have. Behind Piquet came two surprises: Fairuz Fauzy, who has just moved from Menu Motorsport to P1 Motorsport, and Scholarship Class championship leader Ryan Lewis.
In qualifying for the second race, the track started damp but dry tyres were the correct choice by the end of the session. Almost all the front runners had a chance to do a lap on wets before the flag, and pole position was traded several times in the last two minutes. Piccione's last-gasp effort was only the best of a series of similar late flyers.
Piccione had an engine problem in the first session that left him down in fifteenth. Meanwhile Piquet's championship co-leader Adam Carroll (P1 Motorsport) qualified ninth and 12th, and James Rossiter (Fortec Motorsport) will start fifth in both races.
