Mortara wins wet first race

Edoardo Mortara held off a late challenge from Nico Hulkenberg to win the first Formula Three Euro Series race of the weekend in the wet at Barcelona

The start of the race had been delayed by 10 minutes as a downpour hit the circuit moments before the formation lap was due to begin, and Hulkenberg led into the first corner having started from pole position.

Mortara was able to lap faster than him in the early laps though, and he inherited the lead when Hulkenberg went off on lap eight.

The German recovered and closed back in on Mortara, and he eventually finished just 1.2 seconds behind the Italian.

Romain Grosjean took third place having started 14th on the grid, and the Frenchman's championship bid was boosted when rival Sebastien Buemi slid into retirement as Grosjean was chasing him.

Tom Dillman took fourth place, although he had run third for a long time, and only lost the place after a bold move from Grosjean in the closing stages.

James Jakes had a lonely run to fifth place having started 11th, while his Manor Motorsport teammate Franck Mailluex was sixth.

Renger van der Zande recovered to finish seventh after he had been tagged by Buemi earlier in the race, and the Dutchman will share the front row for race two with Edoardo Piscopo, who finished in eighth.
