Hulkenberg on pole at Barcelona

Nico Hulkenberg will start Saturday's F3 Euro Series race at Barcelona from pole position after he was never headed during Friday's qualifying session

The German driver moved to the top of the timesheets early in the session, and he opened out a significant gap on the rest of the field with a series of fast laps.

While the ASM racer was one of the few drivers who failed to improve on his second set of tyres, his earlier lap was good enough for him to eventually take pole by just 0.083 seconds from teammate Kamui Kobayashi.

ASM cars had occupied the top four places at the halfway stage of the session, but their dominance was upset by Yelmer Buurman and Jean-Karl Vernay, who got themselves onto the second row.

Buurman will have to start from the back of the grid though, as the stewards found that he had overtaken after the red flags had come out during the session.

Championship leader Romain Grosjean was fifth fastest ahead of Tom Dillman in the final ASM car, but Grosjean will start 15th due to an engine change that he had before qualifying.

Sebastien Buemi would have been hoping to capitalise on Grosjean's penalty to make up ground in the championship, but the Swiss driver will have a lot of work to do as he could only qualify 11th fastest, so he will start ninth due to the penalties for Buurman and Grosjean.
