Mailleux takes maiden win in race two

Franck Mailleux took his first Formula Three Euro Series win in an entertaining race two at Mugello

The excitement owed a lot to Dani Clos, who nicked by poleman Renger van der Zande into the first turn and proceeded to hold up the entire field.

Mailleux grabbed second on lap four, but despite being clearly quicker, it took him a further eight tours to draft by Clos into Turn 1.

Once in the lead Mailleux pulled out a huge lead - five seconds in two laps - and the race was won. Romain Grosjean overtook Clos and van der Zande in one stunning move to take second, but by then Mailleux was safely ahead and although the race one winner set fastest lap in his attack, he had to settle for second.

Van der Zande finally found a way by Clos to come home third ahead of Kamui Kobayashi, whose fourth-place finish moves him into third in the points.

Ex-championship leader Sebastien Buemi took a solid fifth, while the final point went to Yelmer Buurman, who produced a charging drive to take sixth from 15th on the grid.

Clos eventually took 11th as he faded badly, while James Jakes' title hopes were dealt a blow went he was forced out with damage picked up in a first lap wheel-banging incident.
