The Dutchman, who has been working as a test driver for Honda's development team for the past few months, has been drafted in to test for Jordan this week at Silverstone.
The move to bring Verstappen in for two days testing alongside Nakano indicates that team boss Eddie Jordan is seriously considering him as a replacement.
Hill is due to test on Thursday and Friday alongside team-mate Heinz-Harald Frentzen according to Jordan.
However, it is believed that Hill will announce today that he will not race in the British Grand Prix.
Shinji Nakano is not thought to be in contention for a race drive. The Japanese driver is not thought to be as fast as the Dutchman.
