Tarso Marques Q&A
Tarso Marques returned to F1 this season four years after his previous spell with Minardi came to an end. He hasn't had much luck, and has been overshadowed by team mate Fernando Alonso - although Marques has not been helped by the lack of testing opportunities. So far this year his mileage has been restricted to just 17 laps, and when the team has done any running, either Alonso or Alex Yoong has been at the wheel. The Malaysian is expected to take Tarso's drive at some point in the coming weeks, but only if he's granted a superlicence by the FIA. Meanwhile Tarso remains surprisingly upbeat about the difficult situation faced by team boss Paul Stoddart. Adam Cooper spoke to the Brazilian
"I don't know yet. I'm pretty sure there's a big chance for Alex, and I think it depends only on his superlicence. I don't know when he will receive it, but I know that we have sponsors already on the car [from Yoong]. I have a really good relationship with Paul, and I'm really glad for the chance they gave me, and I know that they need the money. So I think they should change drivers because Alex is bringing a lot of money, and that's good for the team.
"I think the season has been harder than we thought. We didn't do any testing during the season, and we don't have enough money to test. Without money you cannot race in F1. Alex is bringing the money, and I think it's a good amount that can help the team straight away. So I think they should change."
"Yeah. They called me at the beginning of the season and I knew that it would be hard for me and the team. We thought that we could find some more money. The team and myself and everybody are still working, but it's really difficult to find something."
"I think the fact that I've been away didn't change much. F1 is very difficult for everyone, and it all depends on what you have in your hands."
"It's a very different series. The difference between the cars is much smaller than here, so you have a lot of fun driving, fighting for position and for points, even if you're not in the biggest team. The hardest thing in F1 is the difference between the cars. It's the best I can do with the equipment I have in my hands. Of course, I'm not very happy because I would prefer if I could be getting much better results, but unfortunately that's not the way."
"Yes. That's not the only problem, but it's one of the biggest problems we have. It's just the way it is. Unfortunately my car hasn't been as good as it should be."
"Yeah, that's true. It's quite frustrating. But it's the way F1 is. Paul needs the money to run the team. Alonso has some sponsors so he's done the tests. It's a normal situation here."
"I think it's a hard reality. F1 is about money in the end, so it's not a surprising thing."
"Pretty hard. That's why we are not testing, that's why we don't have such powerful engines, that's why we don't have many changes in aerodynamics, many new bits for the car. In F1 you cannot stop. In the first two or three races we could qualify the car where nobody was expecting it, but after that we didn't improve too much and all the other teams are doing thousands of miles of testing. That's why the gap has been getting bigger."
"Considering the fact that we didn't test much. I think that's the big problem for the developing the car. If we could test a little bit more, the car would be a little bit better. I think with the equipment I had, I did a really good job. So far I didn't make any mistakes during the races, and I crashed only once, in Monaco, which was nothing big. I think we did a good job."
"Maybe. I cannot say, because like I said we already have sponsors on the car for the last two races. He (Yoong) could have been driving two races ago, or maybe in the next one, or maybe in Monza, or maybe he won't drive this season. It's not my decision."
"I think I'll have some opportunities to race next year, and even Minardi would be an option. We just need to see how everything goes on the engine deal and stuff like that. It's a little bit early to say, but I'm optimistic."
"Yeah, Paul was just telling me about that. I think it will be a lot of fun."
"I think so! Who gets the lighter one will win for sure, because it will make a lot of difference..."
