Stewart gets BRDC's top position

Jackie Stewart is the new president of the British Racing Drivers' Club, the organisation that is central to the fight to keep the British Grand Prix at Silverstone

As expected, the triple Formula 1 World Champion was voted in by an overwhelming majority at the club's annual general meeting on Friday, July 7th. He replaces his former F1 team boss Ken Tyrrell in the role, with another ex-Tyrrell man, Henry Taylor, elected vice-president.

The BRDC is embroiled in an ongoing battle with Brands Hatch to keep the British Grand Prix at its Silverstone base and Stewart has been a key voice in its campaign. His elevated position should see the Scot take an even more hands-on role in the campaign.

"I am flattered and privileged that the members have chosen to vote me in as president," said Stewart. "During my term of office, I want to play an integral part in assisting the club to build on its assets and oversee the kind of quality, expertly-managed motor sport for which it has become renowned."
