Silverstone day 2: Montoya fastest

Juan Pablo Montoya set the fastest time in testing at Silverstone today (Wednesday), despite suffering a huge crash at the high-speed Becketts corner in the afternoon

The Colombian lost control of his car at the exit of the Becketts complex, which then spun round before skimming over a gravel trap. Montoya's Williams smashed hard into the tyre barriers, with the front wing and both front wheels ripped off by the impact.

It took trackside marshals ten minutes to extract Montoya from the car, as he was trapped underneath the crumpled tyre barrier. He was taken to the medical centre for an examination but was unhurt in the crash.

Jordan driver Ralph Firman set the second fastest time of the day as the Jordan team, which has opted to participate in the Friday test sessions at F1 races this year, used one its limited test days for the first time. The Briton worked on tyre evaluation and aerodynamic comparisons.

Allan McNish was also in action at the track for Renault, another Friday test teams using one of its limited test days. The Scot worked on car set-up and tyre development work, and also ran a development engine.
