Montoya Fastest Despite Crash - Day Two

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya posted the quickest time on the second day of testing at the Silverstone circuit despite crashing his Williams during the session.

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya posted the quickest time on the second day of testing at the Silverstone circuit despite crashing his Williams during the session.

Montoya, fastest on the first day of work, finished nearly a second ahead of his closest rival despite crashing heavily at the Becketts corner when he went off the track and hit the tyre barriers, causing damage to his FW25. He was uninjured but was unable to continue testing as his mechanics were unable to repair the car before the end of the session.

The Jordan and Renault teams, who signed the Heathrow agreement to work on Fridays prior to each Grand Prix, tested outside racing weekends for the first time this season. Briton Ralph Firman was the man in action for the Jordan team, evaluating different tyre constructions, and carrying out aerodynamic comparisons and control systems work.

"It was a reasonable day, with productive work in all the areas we concentrated on," said Jordan's head engineer Gary Anderson at the end of the day. "It was useful for Ralph to get the laps in round the Grand Prix circuit at Silverstone as he hasn't raced here before."

Renault's test driver Alan McNish was the man in charge of testing duties for the French squad, finishing at the bottom of the times after 68 laps.

"It's very enjoyable to be testing again," said Renault technical director Mike Gascoyne. "Today we have accomplished a full day programme: we ran a development engine which, according to Allan's debrief, made a relevant improvement in performance.

"We also conducted, with a very positive result, a suspension development programme and finally, we did tyre evaluation with Michelin in preparation for next week's Spanish Grand Prix. We will continue tomorrow with a similar test programme."

Testing continues tomorrow.
