Silverstone day 1: Trulli on top

Jarno Trulli set the pace at Silverstone today (Monday) to start the final pre-season group test in positive fashion. The Italian was the only driver to enjoy a trouble-free day, completing 64 laps, while those around him were struggling to get into double figures

It was a sunny if cold day in Northampton and the Italian did well to set a best lap of 1m24.390s. Heinz-Harald Frentzen was second quickest for Arrows, although the German was only able to complete 15 laps of the track. He set a best time of 1m25.106s, but after spending most of the winter out of the car he was hoping to do some serious running this week.

There was a similar story of woe in the Jordan garage where the mechanics spent most of the morning building and then dismantling the cars. Giancarlo Fisichella eventually managed to put a few laps together in the afternoon and declared himself much happier with the balance and grip of the car with its new aero package and he's looking forward to testing the Melbourne-spec Honda engine the team will be running tomorrow.

The Italian had an off at Stowe after he hit a stone that dislodged his front wing, but otherwise the car was undamaged. Takuma Sato had less luck and managed just one flying lap.

Jaguar and BAR join the test tomorrow and Renault and Arrows will have an extra car for Jenson Button and Enrique Bernoldi respectively.

Michael Schumacher drove the 2001-spec Ferrari he will race at the Australian GP in testing at Imola today. The German covered 26 laps and concentrated on tyre testing and set-up work. His best lap of 1m30.097s was about five seconds off Ralf Schumacher's fastest lap from the 2001 San Marino GP. Luca Badoer drove the F2002 and set a best time of 1m31.411s over the course of 43 laps.
