Set-up Gamble Pays Off for Montoya

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya admitted that a major gamble paid off for Williams after he grabbed pole position for Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix.

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya admitted that a major gamble paid off for Williams after he grabbed pole position for Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix.

Montoya produced a sensational lap late in the rain-affected session after gambling with a dry set-up and slick tyres as he outpaced teammate Ralf Schumacher to land the second pole of his career.

"I thought it was going to be close and I gave it a big push on the second lap," Montoya said. "Looking at the time difference it is massive. We set the car up for the dry and it paid off. I am very happy with the car and we've been able to make a lot of changes and go faster and faster.

"We made the best of the conditions. If it is dry tomorrow we shall be pretty competitive and Michael (Schumacher) has three sets of tyres so it will be interesting."

Ralf moved to the top of the timesheets ahead of Montoya with seconds of the session remaining only to be toppled by the Colombian again. The duo were almost two seconds quicker than third-placed Michael Schumacher's Ferrari, but Ralf still insisted that there is more speed to come from Williams.

"I knew at the end I could go quick," Schumacher said. "I was prepared to give 100 per cent, but Juan's car was simply a bit better than ours. Yesterday we thought there may be a fair chance for us, much better than we expected. But there is still a lot to improve because the car is not perfect."
