Schumacher Sets the Pace at Mugello - Day Two

German driver Michael Schumacher set the pace at the Mugello circuit on Thursday, the second day of testing at the Italian track.

German driver Michael Schumacher set the pace at the Mugello circuit on Thursday, the second day of testing at the Italian track.

The world champion joined Ferrari team mate Rubens Barrichello today, replacing test driver Luca Badoer, who had worked at Mugello and Fiorano the previous two days.

After a heavy overnight rain, Schumacher continued with the development program of the electronics systems which will be introduced at next week's Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. The German, who also carried out some tyre testing, completed 88 laps, and was more than seven tenths quicker than Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld.

Heidfeld only ran during the morning session, but he was satisfied with the way the Swiss team's traction control system is developing.

"Although I did not get as much running as intended today, the progress for the traction control system is promising and we have accrued a lot of data that will be beneficial to us in Barcelona next week for the Grand Prix," said Heidfeld.

"The car felt very good in the wet this morning. I lost control in the last corner and spun into the wall. I am OK of course. Hopefully the team can make up for the lost time tomorrow."

Rubens Barrichello was third fastest on the second Ferrari, the Brazilian driver being one of the busiest men today after completing a massive 81 laps around the track.

Spaniard Fernando Alonso replaced tester Christijan Albers at the wheel of the Minardi. The 19-year old set the slowest time of the day, nearly three seconds behind Schumacher. Barrichello will be replaced by Badoer on Friday.

The three-day session at Mugello will come to an end tomorrow.
