Schumacher Outpaces Heidfeld at Mugello

World Champion Michael Schumacher was back behind the wheel of his Ferrari F2002 three days after winning the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

The Championship leader was in action at the Mugello circuit, replacing Italian test driver Luca Badoer as the World Champions continued their preparations for the European Grand Prix. Schumacher carried out a race simulation, completing a total of 78 laps, with a best time of 1:22.549.

The German, who will continue testing at Mugello tomorrow, was joined today by the Sauber team, who worked with Nick Heidfeld at the wheel of the Petronas-powered C21. The young German set a quickest time of 1:24.871 after 69 laps.

"Today went very well and we managed to achieve everything that we set out to," said Heidfeld. "The car felt very good. I am pleased with the way things went. We are in good shape to continue our mechanical and aerodynamic program tomorrow when we will also be doing further tyre testing".

Testing at Mugello resumes on Thursday.
