Schumacher: I am Not the Best in the World

World Champion Michael Schumacher said on Thursday that he does not regard himself as the best driver in the world, and insisted he will never attempt to win the Indy 500 or Le Mans 24-Hour events to prove he is.

World Champion Michael Schumacher said on Thursday that he does not regard himself as the best driver in the world, and insisted he will never attempt to win the Indy 500 or Le Mans 24-Hour events to prove he is.

German Schumacher has dominated Formula One this season with five wins in seven races as he attempts to equal the Argentinean Juan Manuel Fangio's record of five Formula One world titles.

But the Ferrari driver insisted that he does not consider himself the best driver in the world and claimed he will never try to prove it in the dangerous Indy 500 and Le Mans 24-Hour events.

"I would never say I'm the best - I'm just in the right place at the moment," Schumacher said. "But I will not do Le Mans (or the Indy 500) because it is simply too dangerous. I have achieved in Formula One and I enjoy racing and that is what drives me. As long as I am enjoying it - it is a big challenge to me."

Schumacher claimed that only 1997 champion Jacques Villeneuve and Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya have proven themselves after switching from America and insisted the results prove Formula One is the best series in the world.

"It is two different issues. We've seen crossover from America and only two drivers have achieved - Juan Pablo Montoya and Jacques Villeneuve," he said. "Some others have not done so well. If we look Formula One drivers have gone the other way to America and won in their first races."
