Schumacher cautious on title chances

Michael Schumacher says he prefers to be cautious about his chances of fighting for the title, and admits he is not ruling out any rivals just yet

Although the championship fight seems to have become a two-horse race, with Schumacher and Renault rival Fernando Alonso winning the last four races, the Ferrari driver reckons it is too early to write other drivers off.

"Many have said that the title race is between myself and Alonso but I do not want to discuss it," said Schumacher. "It is too early to make predictions.

"Things change very quickly in F1 and so I am cautious. Ultimately, this debate is secondary. The important thing is that we perform well in each race. As we saw at Barcelona, the details can affect the outcome".

After two consecutive wins in Italy and Germany, Schumacher had to settle for second place in Spain, where Alonso took a commanding win to extend his championship lead to 15 points.

Schumacher admitted he was not happy with the result, but he accepted he can't win all the time.

"I could accept Sunday's result though I did expect more from this race. But once again, this is sport and sometimes things go differently to the way you think. This is the usual way of things; this is the great thing about the battle."

The seven-time world champion, however, has vowed to continue working hard to keeps his hopes of an eighth title alive.

"We have already seen how crucial constant improvement is. Now we will work tirelessly on the latest data. We are in the title race and we will certainly not be giving in."
