Renault blows big chance

Renault drivers Fernando Alonso and Jarno Trulli both threw away a chance to repeat last year's sensational performance and qualify at the sharp end of the grid in Sepang. Team insiders have long viewed Malaysia a one of the team's best chances to win this year

Alonso and Trulli ensured that they would run last in final qualifying by being first and second on the first runs, but a potentially mighty lap from Alonso was wasted when the Spaniard spun into the gravel trap, bringing the marathon 2h04m qualifying session to a slightly premature close. He was classified 19th, as Takuma Sato had earlier performed a similar gyration with his BAR, and also failed to set a time.

Immediately prior to Alonso's mishap Trulli had a big wobble in the very same place. He managed to catch it, but lost enough momentum to leave him in eighth place.

Their pace in the first runs suggested that the team had run relatively light in order to secure the last places for the run that mattered. This may well have backfired, and Trulli admitted to Autosport that the addition of extra fuel for second qualifying contributed to making the car difficult to drive.

"I am disappointed with my result," rued the Italian. "We had expected to do better, but I made a number of mistakes on my lap and that cost me several tenths. Nevertheless, I'm optimistic for the race: the car will be quick on the long runs, and I think we can get back tomorrow what we lost today."

"I made a mistake under braking for Turn 14, lost the back end and the car spun," said Alonso. "Of course it's frustrating, particularly for the team who have worked hard this weekend, but I'm still confident. We know the car is quick and even starting last, I think we can fight for points. You can be sure it will be an aggressive, attacking race."

Alonso denied that he would consider a pitlane start, which would allow him to change strategy and run a different fuel load, although it would have obvious advantages.
