Patrick Head Q&A

Three poles achieved by Juan Pablo Montoya in the last three races have not been reflected by results for BMW Williams, who logged just seven points - all earned by Ralf Schumacher - in Monaco, Montreal and the Nurburgring. Engine failures proved costly in the first two and at the 'Ring a less than optimum tyre performance on race day left the white and blue cars struggling. Michelin's aggressive philosophy has made for a quick package in qualifying, and the company admits that it will have something different in Silverstone. Williams is still 20 points ahead of McLaren, but in the drivers' standings Juan and Ralf are under serious threat from Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard. Adam Cooper spoke to technical director Patrick Head after the European GP

"We were obviously using the rear tyres harder than we should do, and we paid the penalty in terms of pace. We were never going to be able to compete with Ferrari, but in terms of being able to stay ahead of McLaren it was about the use of the rear tyres. But we're making progress in that area, and we hope that we shall be able to run something a bit better at the next race."

"With our tyre problem maybe that's what we should have done. It was always an option for a faster race."

"Well, Jenson finished nine or 10 seconds behind Ralf. But maybe that's where he was going to finish anyway."

"Oh yes."

"A bit of both, maybe."

"I didn't really see it all, but one has to assume that they had an argument about the same bit of road. I think Juan hit a kerb and lost it, so I'm sure David's feeling a bit sore about it."

"I would think it is frustrating. Basically the last three races have been extremely weak for us, and we've got to get our season back on course, and make sure we pull away from McLaren, which we're more than capable of doing. But we've got to make it happen."

"It's the ifs and buts of motor racing, but their car has been reliable in the last few races, and if you count the points we would have had if we hadn't had various engine failures we would have been further away from them. So I don't think that's a problem."

"We'll damn well make sure that it does."
