Panis Feeling Positive after First Point

Frenchman Olivier Panis promised there is more to come from Toyota after he finished in the points for the first time this season at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Frenchman Olivier Panis promised there is more to come from Toyota after he finished in the points for the first time this season at the Canadian Grand Prix.

His eighth place finish at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve came six years to the day since he almost ended his career on the same track when he broke both his legs in a crash.

The one-time Grand Prix winner believes his new team will give him the opportunity to return to the top flight in the future and said his result, after five retirements in seven races, could be the turning point.

"I feel positive," he said. "For me it's the first step and all the weekend the team was doing a good job. The car ran quite well and we qualified both cars in the top ten. For the race we finished where we started more or less - no one broke down - and now we just have to improve the car some more to close the gap between us and the car in front."

Panis said that the team had discovered several important solutions during the test at Monza before this weekend's race and improved the way the car rode the kerbs and handled low-grip corners.

But he admitted the engine performance was crucial to the team's success in Montreal and added: "The engine we have is really unbelievable and as soon as we improve the chassis side I think we'll have a really good package.

"I've got no idea about the next race, to be honest, but I hope we can expect the same weekend as we had here. I am very positive about Magny Cours and Silverstone because this type of circuit is really good for us."
