Olivier Panis Q&A
Olivier Panis has started his second season at BAR with the unfortunate record of six consecutive retirements. He was involved in the first lap crash in Australia and has followed that up with early exits in Malaysia (clutch), Brazil (gearbox), Imola (throttle), Spain (exhaust) and Austria (engine). At the latter event, the mechanics tried to improve the dire situation by having a 'lucky' black cat cuddly toy on display in the garage and on the grid, but even that didn't seem to help. Will his luck change at Monaco, where he was the surprise winner for Ligier in 1996? Adam Cooper spoke to the Frenchman
"Well, I made a good start and I had a strategy for one stop, so I'd normally stop on lap 50. Everything was going well for the strategy, but then the engine blew up. I could feel the engine performance going down, and it blew up on lap 22. It locked like a go-kart. It helped me a lot because I drove a go-kart when I was very young! I just tried to stop the car."
"It's the team who came up with that, not me! The best thing I can do is concentrate and work for Monaco."
"No, but on Friday in Austria I made 66 laps, and on Saturday morning 40. OK, I'm not very lucky, but I'm sure something will happen."
"Yes, it's always very special, but that win was a long time ago now. I need to come back to the podium, definitely. But anything is possible in Monaco. The car has started to improve, and maybe Monaco will be a good weekend for us. I'm looking forward to it."
"We have a car to fight between 10th and 14th position. We need an aerodynamic step, and also Honda are making a completely new engine this year. I trust Honda a lot, but we need to wait for the new evolution, and then maybe the whole package will go quicker and be nearer to the front of the grid. I work so hard all the time, and I need to continue to push hard like that. We need to be positive. I see something good in this team, and we just need to wait and see for the development of the car. We're really looking forward to Canada and the new aero kit from Geoff Willis. And also we should have a big improvement of the engine for Canada."
"We were very close last year all the time. I don't say it's my priority, but it's still important, because everybody says Jacques is very, very quick in qualifying. I respect Jacques a lot, and we have a very good relationship. I think it's quite positive for the team to have two strong drivers like us."
"I think he's very positive and he wants to push the team into the best position. I trust him a lot and I think he has a lot of experience in motor racing."
"Yes. I have a big respect for Craig. He picked me up from McLaren, and he grew the team up, starting from a white page. He made a good job. After that there were some political problems, but I'm not interested in this."
"It's a rule, and we need to follow it. I'm not 100 percent happy with that, because I'm a racing driver, and I want to fight with other drivers and overtake some drivers. If I overtake them and I'm taking a risk to start 10 places behind at the next race, it's quite hard for us. We need to think about this and see what happens."
"Exactly. This for me is the worse problem. A problem like Michael and Juan Pablo in Malaysia, this was not fair for Juan Pablo, and Michael said the same thing. This was a racing incident, and that's all."
