McLaren aims for improved fortunes
McLaren-Mercedes hopes to bounce back from its disappointing start to the season at Monaco this weekend, with David Coulthard aiming for a fifth successive points scoring finish of 2002
Coulthard, who has scored 10 points so far, says an encouraging test session at Paul Ricard since the Austrian Grand Prix is a reason to be cheerful ahead of this weekend's race.
"We conducted a positive test in France last week, completing over 1,850 miles," said Coulthard. "I am now aiming to build on my points tally for the season at Monaco. The circuit is a fantastic challenge and probably one of the most enjoyable events of the season."
The slow and twisty nature of the track should help the McLaren, as it will place less strain on the Mercedes engine that has been cited as one of the weaker points of the team's package as it lacks power compared to its rivals.
"On this narrow and tricky circuit, the chassis, engine and tyres have to meet special requirements," said Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug. "You need an engine with good torque and an efficient traction control."
McLaren's managing director Martin Whitmarsh added: "The tight nature of the course and the low speeds demand a maximum downforce configuration. We are continuing to focus on achieving a performance enhancement. We are aware of the goals and the whole team is working hard to accomplish them."
