Montoya Fastest in First Qualifying - Spanish GP

Juan Pablo Montoya set the fastest time for Williams-BMW in the opening qualifying session of the Spanish Grand Prix as the usual pace setters Michael Schumacher and Jenson Button languished down the field.

Juan Pablo Montoya set the fastest time for Williams-BMW in the opening qualifying session of the Spanish Grand Prix as the usual pace setters Michael Schumacher and Jenson Button languished down the field.

Run under clear skies and with air temperatures of 20 degrees Celsius, the session saw some surprising positions as teams played out different strategies ahead of the grid-deciding session.

Schumacher finished ninth fastest with his Brazilian teammate Rubens Barrichello down in 13th place. Button ended the session 11th, one place behind his Japanese BAR-Honda teammate Takuma Sato.

Colombian Montoya finished with a time of 1:15.574 to finish ahead of Sauber pair Giancarlo Fisichella, of Italy, and Brazilian Felipe Massa who posted second and third fastest times.

German Ralf Schumacher finished fourth for Williams with Jarno Trulli fifth for Renault and Frenchman Olivier Panis completing the top six in his Toyota. McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen was eighth.
