JPM takes provisional pole

Juan Pablo Montoya took his customary provisional pole position in the pre-qualifying session for the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona. The WilliamsF1 driver's 1m15.574s lap, some seven tenths slower than Takuma Sato's best lap from this morning

The Sauber drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Felipe Massa were second and third quickest, although it is likely the Swiss team is running its cars light on fuel because the team has not been fast so far this weekend.

Ralf Schumacher was fourth quickest in the second Williams BMW ahead of Jarno Trulli, Olivier Panis and Mark Webber. McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen was eighth ahead of world champion Michael Schumacher while this morning's star, Sato, was 10th fastest.

Jenson Button put in a conservative 1m16.462s lap to place him 11th ahead of David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello. Cristiano da Matta was 14th while Spain's hero Fernando Alonso was only 15th.

Nick Heidfeld's Jordan-Cosworth was 16th, faster than the factory Jaguar of Christian Klien. Giorgio Pantano ended the session 18th fastest ahead of Minardi's Gianmaria Bruni and Zsolt Baumgartner.
