British rookie Ralph Firman has been backed by his father after he claimed his first point with an eighth place finish at the Spanish Grand Prix last Sunday.
Firman, who had been under pressure to perform after four difficult opening races, came back fighting with a strong display in Barcelona as he fought off rival Jenson Button for eighth place.
"Ralph had very little seat time before the season and has had to do his learning in public," said a confident Firman Sr. "He should be secure here for the year."
There were rumours at last weekend's Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona that he could be on his way out but he proved a point by claiming one for eighth place and his father, Ralph Senior, believes he has already done enough.
Firman was only signed on the eve of the season after Jordan delayed their decision on a second driver because of commercial reasons and he had very few testing sessions before making his debut in Australia in March.
His latest performance came after Jaguar handed Brazilian rival Antonio Pizzonia a warning to raise his game following his disappointing performances in the opening four races. But Firman's father is certain there was never any chance of Jordan handing out a similar threat and added: "It's not the same situation as Antonio (Pizzonia) at Jaguar because he has at least had quite a lot of testing."
