Damon Hill: Eddie Jordan reaction

Team boss Eddie Jordan has said he will not try to persuade beleagured Damon Hill to race on at Silverstone against his will

Hill all-but admitted his glittering career was over after retiring from the French Grand Prix with electrical problems.

The millionaire Irishman insisted it would be 'grossly immoral' to try and make the ex-champion change his mind if he has decided to bring down the career on a seven-year career.

'Talking him into staying at Silverstone for one last run would be grossly immoral,' said Jordan.

'It can only be the driver's decision. I would never forgive myself if Damon Hill did the race in Britain and for some horrible reason something went wrong.

'I am the principal of the team and will absolutely support whatever he does.

'If he calls it a day all of us have been massively lucky to spent time with him.

'In Britain it will be hard to find a better ambassador for Damon in the sport or outside it He won 22 GPs and that's an even better testament to him.

'I'm going to speak with Damon now. I've been aware for some time that Damon's not happy with his performance, because he's miles better than his performances at the moment.

'He's very professional person. He's one of the nicest people I've ever met
in any walk of life.

'I will respect his decision when he tells me and I suspect I know what it is - and I will reluctantly accept it.

'You can never ask somebody to do this sort of job when he's not completely into it. He's done so much for this sport. It's his call.

'The team must support him emphatically until all routes are explored. If he's made a decision to stop, then whatever it is we will support him.'
