Cosworth aim to stay with Williams

Cosworth are hoping to continue their partnership with the Williams team next season and have not ruled out the possibility of supplying to up to three Formula One teams

The British company's V8 engine have earned praise both from Williams and their rivals so far, as the power-unit is believed to be one of the strongest of the field.

Cosworth's future with Williams, however, is still up in the air, and the team need to decide whether to continue with them or switch to Toyota engines for 2007.

Cosworth's commercial director Bernard Ferguson said his company would be delighted to continue with Williams for another season, and he admitted they would welcome a deal with another top team too.

"Before we can get another team we've got to secure our future with our current team. We'd be delighted to stay where we are, and we'd be delighted to have another competitive team alongside us," said Ferguson.

"Because we have to pass our costs onto the teams, and the more teams we've got, the less the cost is to each team.

"Are we looking to secure more business? Absolutely. I would love to do that to complement the Williams relationship rather than replace it."

Ferguson also claimed Cosworth would consider the possibility of supplying three teams, but admitted that would depend of their success in 2007.

"Certainly feasible," he admitted. "Ideally, three teams, or perhaps two in 2007 and three in 2008. 2008 looks quite bullish, but '07 is the bridge we've got to cross to get to '08, when the theory is that costs will come down.

"More importantly the opportunity for people to buy success by throwing dollars at it is reduced, which can only help us to become more competitive, so I'm looking forward to '08 from that point of view.

"We've got to be successful in the rest of this season and get through 2007 to get there though."
