Webber worried about Monaco qualifying

Williams driver Mark Webber believes qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix will be very hard for the drivers, and has warned of the possible dangers of backing off on the tight streets of the principality

Webber admitted he is especially concerned about the first part of qualifying, where all 22 drivers will try to make it to the second part in a 15-minute shoot-out.

"The first session is going to be very hard," said Webber. "We have told, there are a few rookies: if you back off at all you really have to look in your mirror after every corner.

"If you back off, a car will be on top of you that quickly. It will be okay, there will be a few excuses here and there and hopefully I am not one of them.

"As long as it is not dangerous I think people are sensible enough not to have huge speed differences. That is the thing that worries you, we don't want any of that."

Several drivers have complained this season about rivals slowing them down during qualifying, with BMW's Jacques Villeneuve even getting a penalty for blocking Renault driver Giancarlo Fisichella during qualifying for the European Grand Prix.

On a track like Monte Carlo, where overtaking is virtually impossible and where it's hard to get out of the way of other drivers, finding a clear lap will be a tough task.

Webber said the drivers have discussed the issue in order to minimise the problem.

"We just mentioned the other day with the group of drivers that we would like to make sure of all places Monaco is very important," the Australian added.

"You have nowhere to go if you back off in certain areas so you need to be ... you don't want to be learning about that in qualifying.

"The experienced guys know the score but every now and again you can still get caught out."
